This thing is (was) real. I managed to install it with 128 megs on RAM installed via minimal Windows XP installation using Daemon Tools to read the ISO (legit RC1, build 7600 IIRC?) off of iPod. Using edited DLL file (as pointed out) one can bypass the limitations regarding RAM amount.
Getting it to boot with such little RAM was kinda lucky strike, as I just tried it for the fun of it - and it worked! The unit runs quite a lot better with more RAM (duh, less swapping to HDD), but as the point was to go as low as possible, so. The unit has 2 megs of VRAM, so it cannot run Aero (not that it would boot up this millenia if it did). Aero makes the UI see-through - this 'basic theme' clearly ain't one. Learn the difference. If I wanted to get the most out of the unit, I'd run Win2k as I used to.
The point was to take part in a competition where they were looking for lowest specs to be able to run W7 back in Assembly 2009 in Helsinki, Finland. Sadly I got disqualified due to not being able to fulfill the requirement of 'loading up Assembly website in browser'. I'm not that familiar with the technical things (no, really, I'm not!), but my 486 couldn't be used to install XP on it for the very same reason:) I think the whole SSE-thingy came with Pentiums, so those are the lowest one can go for various reasons. IIRC I did with 32 megs on this very same unit (this has 32 megs soldered in, and one free slot) and it did boot up. I also ran W7 on my desktop in virtual box, and I got it still boot with 20 megs allocated. I'm 'out of the scene' so might be true with the 16 megs, just telling my own experience.
