Microsoft Tts Voices Free Download
Recently, I upgraded my computer to Windows 10. I decided to try out the Microsoft Windows 10 voices and found out that I was OK with them. I have tried out the American voices David Desktop and Zira Desktop and they work good enough. Actually, compared to many of my older commercial voices, I prefer David and Zira. My favorite English voice remains VM Bridget, which I got years ago.
Fortunately, it survived my OS upgrade. While trying out the American Microsoft voices in Windows 10, I also found out that Microsoft offers free language packs for download, with foreign voices and keyboards. I downloaded a number of language packs including French, Spanish, Italian, German, and Russian. I copied some text off the internet in each language and tried all those foreign language voices out in TA3. I am not a native speaker in any of those languages, and would not be a good judge of their quality, but they sounded pretty good to my non-native ear.
I especially liked loading up the Russian language pack, with keyboard, and trying that out. It has been years since I studied Russian, and I never went beyond the basics, but it was fun for me to be able to use the Microsoft Russian mnemonic keyboard to enter text. Better yet, I found out that in Windows 10 you can have the keyboard show on your desktop so if you don't know which key to type, you just need to look at the keyboard layout onscreen.

Back in the day, I had a separate keyboard with Russian letters taped on to my physical keyboard. It worked, but the improvements over the years in Microsoft Windows have made onscreen alternative keyboards a much better option. So now I have a collection of free foreign voices and keyboards from Microsoft. I am wondering if anyone has done some serious comparison of commercial voices versus free Microsoft TTS voices. I have noticed that Microsoft continues to improve their voices with each upgrade, and I wonder if they are on par with commercial offerings. For the little bit that I ever use some of these foreign language voices, I doubt I would purchase a commercial voice. But I would like to know how the Microsoft voices compare to commercial voices in, for example, French, Russian, etc.
Does anyone have an opinion on the new Windows 10 foreign voices and how they compare to commercial offerings? Some of the voices included in Windows 10 can also be used on older versions of Windows. For use on versions of Windows prior to 10, they can be used as Microsoft Speech Platform Runtime voices typically used by developers for server-based speech. Since they are primarily intended for programmers, they can only be used to a limited extent on older versions of Windows because only some programs support them. I myself use Vera Pro via the NVDA screen reader on another computer. To me she is the best-sounding of Microsoft's newer voices.
Seether and amy lee broken.
Some of the other English voices, frankly, sound robotic to my ears. I only know English, so the other languages are of no use to me. If anyone reads this who uses NVDA, you can obtain more instruction about usage in NVDA and download links at the following URL. Navigate to the Microsoft Speech Platform heading. I think I clearly stated 'For the little bit that I ever use some of these foreign language voices.'
So it's not like I would ever be listening to them continuously. Also, it would be more helpful to have some native speakers in the TTS world offer a comparison of how good a non-English commercial voice versus Microsoft's free voice is in any language. For example, a native speaker would be rated 10/10 and the commercial and free voices could be rated on that scale to compare them to the native speaker.
That way, I could be a more knowledgeable consumer if I ever got to a point where I wanted to invest more time and money in any voice. As for listening continuously, especially in foreign languages, I will download audiobooks in French from YouTube, such as those offered by LibriVox, with native speakers providing the audio. I just follow along with the text provided by Gutenberg, so it works good for me. Of course, those recordings will be of classic, out of copyright, material. I would want to use the TTS voices to read aloud something current, like perhaps the daily news in French from one of the French newspapers online. Those are typically short, less than a few minutes, of reading.
I will agree with your final point that if you do listen to TTS audio for any great period of time, investing in the best sounding voice would make the experience much more satisfying. Gtaus, the Speech Platform version of Vera is MSSpeechTTSen-USZiraPro.msi. On the voice languages page, select the download link. If Vera does not show, there should be a 'more' link to expand the list of TTS voices. TTS Vera Pro should then be shown.
Check the files you want and proceed with the download. Since I don't have Windows 10 yet, I am not sure if the voices shipped with Win10 use the Microsoft Speech Platform runtime. Regarding the question in your first post, I think the commercial voices created by Acapela and Ivona offered for purchase by Nextup sound the most natural/realistic. PHenry1026 wrote.Come to think of if, your first post seems to be a personal attack on people who buy and use premium voices by implying that there is some equivalency between these horrible free voices and premium voices.
Not what I meant. When I upgraded my computer to Windows 10, some of my older commercial voices I have been using since Windows XP got lost. Along with my Bluetooth connection and few other annoyances that I now have to work around. Anyway, I can't fight every battle and decided to check out the Windows 10 free TTS voices. The MS US voices have improved a lot since Microsoft SAM and I was pleasantly surprised.
Enough so, that I tried out their other language packs. They don't sound horrible to me, but then I'm not a native speaker in those languages and stated so. Also, I was excited about the added foreign language keyboards, especially Russian.
For the record, I have no problem with someone buying premium voices.
